Augustus Holbrook Gunnin was born in Barrow County, Georgia to parents James Lovett McCord and Fanny Sykes Gunnin, and Emmie Lorene Harris was also born in Barrow County to parents John Littleton and Nancy D.Johnson Harris. They were married July 27, 1902 and lived in the Winder, Georgia area until they came to East Point in 1922. They lived for a few months on Lyle Avenue in East Point and then moved to 511 now 2941 Semmes Street where some of the family remained until the house was sold in 1979. Mr. Gunnin's untimely death in 1927 left Mrs. Gunnin with eight boys and two girls to rear, the youngest Olen only three years old. Her strong Christian faith and devoted mother love saw her through the trying years. The family has always been active in the East Point Christian Church and many other activities in the community. Hoyt Gunnin served on the East Point Fire Department for 25 years, retiring in 1967. Olen has been on the City Council for twelve years. During World War II, six of the seven boys served in the armed forces, but all returned safely home. The chiltiren of this family are: Augustus Hoyt, East Point; James Littleton, deceased; Chester Leon, Atlanta; Harold Reynolds, Charles Edward, East Point; Emmie Lucile Harrison, deceased; Robert Whitley, Lorene Elizabeth Carroll, and Claude Olen, all of East Point. There are nineteen grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
